Series Notes 01
Series Notes 01
What is the history of an item? Where do the materials originate? Who wove the fabric?
We would always ask ourselves these questions when buying clothes, but found they were never answered. In an age where the focus is on producing clothes as quickly and cheaply as possible, we wanted to break away. That’s why we created Jacks & Co. So we could make great, lasting clothes and so we could always answer these questions.
Introducing Series 01
Our first individual, limited batch project.
Designed and produced for quality above all else.
Nothing symbolises the timelessness of classic menswear style quite like the Chore Jacket. Originally developed to keep nineteenth century French labourers, farmers, and railroad workers warm - hence the term ‘chore’ - it wasn’t long before it made its way across the Atlantic and solidified its position as a menswear staple. The style has now evolved to become a modern essential. Equal measures versatile, reliable, and stylish, the Chore Jacket was an easy choice for us as the first of our series projects.
Starting with the fit. What makes or breaks a jacket. We started first with the classic style that we and others had worn for years. Then updated it with a Jacks & Co feel. We tapered the fit of the sleeve, to remove much of the excess fabric that comes with these functionally focused pieces. We redesigned the collar with a refined profile - no more flapping around in the wind.
Our most important consideration was which fabric to use. We already had in mind what we wanted - heavy weight, dry look and feel, slight texture - but this still left much room for interpretation. We reviewed swatches in our fabric library and reached out to partner mills in Europe. At first, we received many fabrics, all incredible, but most too fine or with too much shine or stretch for our purposes. That was when we caught up with Andrew, menswear guru and local representative for renowned Japanese mill, Yagi Tsusho. In recent years, Japanese mills have gained a reputation as the premier suppliers of workwear textiles, combining traditional weaving techniques and knowledge with a reinvigorated interpretation of classic American style. We reviewed Andrew’s collection and instantly knew we’d found what we were after. A perfect mix of ruggedness and refinement. We immediately ordered in two colours: Navy & Olive. And put into production a limited range, keeping numbers as low as possible to preserve quality.
There’s plenty more to say. For another time.
